Qingzang railway NJ2 diesel-electric locomotives

NJ2 is a class of diesel-electric locomotives employed by China Railways. It is a standard General Electric C38AChe, which was specially-designed for high altitude operation on the Qinghai-Tibet railway. It is used on the Qingzang Railway that connects Xining, Qinghai Province, to Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, in the People's Republic of China

Qingzang railway

The Qingzang railway, Qinghai–Xizang railway, or Qinghai–Tibet railway (simplified Chinese: 青藏铁路; traditional Chinese: 青藏鐵路; pinyin: Qīngzàng Tiělù; Tibetan: mtsho bod lcags lam མཚོ་བོད་ལྕགས་ལམ།), is a high-altitude railway that connects Xining, Qinghai Province, to Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, in People's Republic of China.
The total length of Qingzang railway is 1956 km (1215 mi). Construction of the 815 km (506 mi) section between Xining and Golmud was completed by 1984. The 1142 km (709 mi) section between Golmud and Lhasa was inaugurated on 1 July 2006 by president Hu Jintao: the first two passenger trains were "Qing 1" (Q1) from Golmud to Lhasa, and "Zang 2" (J2) from Lhasa.[1] This railway is the first to connect the Tibet Autonomous Region to any other province, which, due to its altitude and terrain, is the last province-level entity in mainland China to have a conventional railway. Testing of the line and equipment started on 1 May 2006.[2] Passenger trains run from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xining and Lanzhou.[3]
The line includes the Tanggula Pass, which, at 5,072 m (16,640 feet) above sea level, is the world's highest rail track. The 1,338 m Fenghuoshan tunnel is the highest rail tunnel in the world at 4,905 m above sea level. The 4,010-m Guanjiao tunnel is the longest tunnel from Xining to Golmod and the 3,345-m Yangbajing tunnel is the longest tunnel from Golmod to Lhasa. More than 960 km, or over 80% of the Golmud-Lhasa section, is at an altitude of more than 4,000 m. There are 675 bridges, totalling 159.88 km, and about 550 km of the railway is laid on permafrost.

HAIDAR DF3 Dong Feng type 3 diesel locomotive

Prototype Information

The DF3's were built in the 1970's, mostly at Dalian Locomotive works. They were very common locomotives in the southern and western areas in China, often running in pairs in back to back formation and were used in both freight and passenger service. They were used well into the 21st century, but have largely become extinct on China's rail network.

General

The DF3's are Haidar's second model, and in what seems to be their fascination with the older railway models of China, have chosen the DF3. This may be Haidar's last plastic model as they are moving towards brass models, which seems to be the latest trend in China. The first production run comprised of 6 road numbers in the standard Green/gold livery, the second was a limitied edition model (1000 pieces) in the rare blue/white livery as used on the San-Mao Railway (Guangdong province).

Details

Simply put, these are the most heavily detailed plastic models I've ever come across, even surpassing many brass models. There are a massive amount of seperately applied parts, mostly in brass - some of which have to be seen to be believed. The windshield wipers, grab irons and handrails are absolutely beautiful. The hollowed out brass horns are mounted on twin pole stantions. Really very pretty. There is a small baggy of parts for side mirrors, that are so small, I'm simply too terrified to even open it up.

The paint work is very evenly applied and all lines and lettering is extremely sharp and crisp. Each model sports its own individual detail differences as per prototype, with some having extra front handrails or a stainless steel strip, different colored number boards and either green or yellow rear doors.

Performance

Although these are quite short models, they are very heavy and on level track should easily haul a 10 car passenger train. Electrical pickup is perfect, motors are very quiet and the throttle is very responsive - however due to the drive system, the wheels seem to 'fall' into the teeth of the gears, creating a very slight hiccup at very low speeds, similar to the SS1 electrics.

Electronics

Inside the model is a PC board where an 8 pin decoder can easily be substituted for the dummy plug. I appreciated the room to actually house a decoder. There is also room for a DXDC sound decoder, the top detachable section of the frame has a space for a speaker for these. The DF3's have very white directional (almost blue) LED's for the main headlights front and rear and also directional red LED's on the opposite direction of movement. The LED's are very strong and shine through the dark green plastic sides of the headlight on the B end of the engine. However this may not be such a big problem as these engines rarely ran a train while in reverse and while in back to back operation, the lights in between the units were switched off - the rear lights can simply be unplugged from inside the model to turn them off permanently. There was a mis-wiring issue with all the green DF3's. To explain, one of the wires connecting the red marker lights on the front are accidentally connected to the white marker lights. This (In DCC mode at least), will cause all the front lights to turn on (including the red ones!) when going forward with no lights on the rear end - and vice versa when run in reverse.

Coupler Conversion

The stock couplers are dummy knuckle couplers, that no words (profanity is an exception) can begin to show my dismay. A medium shank coupler is good for replacing these (Kadee #5, 58 or 158). Short shank couplers (kadee #53/153) can be used for the rear ends if double heading for a nice close appearance, however this should only be attempted by those who have layouts with broad curves, or the rear lights will make contact with each other (and will probably snap off).

Other Notes

Despite the problems, these are hugely popular amongst modellers and when it comes to Chinese models, there's really nothing quite like it. If handled with care, they shouldn't give too much trouble and will be one of the highlights in your collection.

History of DF Dong Feng and DF3 Dong Feng 3

In September 1958 Dalian Locomotive and rolling Stock Work (D Loco) produced a 2 unit, 4000 horsepower diesel electric engine. This engine was performed several enhancements on its major components and parts before it went into production.

According to the Sino-Soviet technology cooperation agreement, in 1959 the Soviets provided a full set of TE3 blueprints to Loco. Based on these blueprints and the trial runs done on Julong. DLoco made improvements and redesigned its blueprints. In September 1964 the production of the diesel engine formally began. This locomotive was classified as ND (Nei Dian which means diesel electric in Chinese). In August 1966, the classification was changed from ND to DF (Dong Feng which means east wind) to represent good fortune. Since 1970 over 100 units of DF were produced annually. By 1973 a total of 706 units were built.

In order to fulfill the urgent need for dieselization of passenger services DLoco modified DF’s traction motor to increase the maximum speed from 100km/h to 120km/h. DLoco accomplished this by changing the gear ratio from 75/17 to 71/21. With this change came a new classification DF3. DF signified a gear ratio of 75/17 and was generally used for freight traffic, while DF3 signified a gear ratio of 71/21 and was used fro passenger travel.

For 10 years between 1964 and 1973 DF’s and DF3’s were massively produced. During this time over 50% of the nation’s diesel fleet was DF or DF3 class. However, in 1974, DF3’s role in passenger services gradually decreased because of the introduction of a more efficient and powerful diesel engine DF4. At this point many DF3’s were geared back to 75/17 and thus became DF class throughout the years. Thus, DF3s honourably retired. Between 1983 and 1992 the role of DFs was for freight traffic. The number of DF’s reached its peak at 886 by 1990. DFs also held a record for length of service. The longest service span for a DF diesel engine was 35 years, and the second longest service span was 25 years. Most DFs slowly faded out of history’s stage. Now only a few remain in good condition and are being used for light switching jobs.

DF diesel engines were the backbone of early stage dieselization and have contributed tremendously to the development of China’s transit system. As the father and soul of China’s diesel engine DFs and DF3s have certainly played a vital role in the development of the China railway industry.
